The Kenner AT-AT Driver action figure always felt like rather a functional figure, just as he was rather a functional character in The Empire Strikes Back. He wears a white and grey jump suit with a helmet and breathing apparatus reminiscent of the black Tie Fighter Pilot. The AT-AT Driver's helmet is rather difficult to explain since he drives a ground vehicle and as such presumably doesn't require breathing apparatus. The helmet and oxygen pipes suggest a space pilot just as much as the X-Wing Fighter pilots' helmets say World War II flying Ace. Another Empire Strikes Back character that looks to have superfluous breathing apparatus is the 2-1B Medical Droid; especially when we consider K-2SO's boasts in Rogue One that he can breathe in space.
Find Vintage AT-AT Driver action figure on eBay
Once you had an AT-AT you were going to need two of these AT-AT Driver action figures (unless you wanted to put the AT-AT Commander figure upfront), unlike other ships and vehicles where you generally needed just the one. Other notable exceptions are the Bespin Twin-Pod Cloud Car and the Rebel Armoured Snowspeeder. Earlier vehicles such as the Imperial Troop Transport and Landspeeder had also encouraged us to buy more action figures by having two seats up-front but in the Empire Strikes Back vehicles there was a small explosion of two-seater vehicles subtly motivating us to buy more figures to man them.
The AT-AT driver action figure carries a really nice blaster rifle with strap. Unfortunately a lot of kids seem to have snapped or cut the strap off to make the rifle more sleek looking. I think I might even have been guilty of doing this myself with at least one of my original AT-AT Driver rifles.
All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.
All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
