Kenner Lando Calrissian Action Figure: Overview

Kenner Lando Calrissian figure Big Smile Version

Lando's greeting of the crew of the Millennium Falcon does feature one of the most memorable smiles of all the first three Star Wars movies so as the first and only smiling Star Wars action figure the Bespin Lando Calrissian does seem to capture a great movie moment from The Empire Strikes Back. In the landing scene on Bespin this is the first proper welcome we see in the first Star Wars Trilogy.

It's obviously a bit tense, since Lando is unfortunately helping to ensare his friend in Vader's trap, but his smile is the first openly welcoming gesture of hospitality aside from perhaps old Ben Kenobi taking Luke back to his cave and showing him his father's lightsaber (nothing phallic about that image whatsoever).

Lando Calrissian Figure frown version

Note: This is not the only Lando Calrissian action figure which makes a nod towards the initial greeting scene on Cloud City. The bulky big-fisted POTF2 Lando Calrissian calls to mind somewhat Lando's play boxing with his old buddy Han on the landing platform of Cloud City.

Kenner Lando Calrissian Action Figure Non-smiling Version

Once the action on Cloud City has become more serious, C-3PO has been blasted apart, Han tortured etc. it would be incongruous to have a smiling Lando Calrissian trying to help the heroes to escape Darth Vader's clutches so there is some logic to Kenner having released both versions of the Lando action figure almost as a before and after.

Vintage Lando Calrissian Figure paint loss

You can also see from the photo that the non-smiling Lando Calrissian Bespin figure had no white paint applied to his eyes whereas on the smiling version you can see both his pupils and the whites of his eyes. I might have to re-photograph the non-smiling version with a better vintage Bespin blaster as the one I used is not in great condition.

The Kenner Lando Calrissian action figure does suffer a little from paint loss around his hair and hands. This is exacerbated by the fact that Kenner used different coloured base paints for Lando's head and arms, so when he loses paint on his black hair brown shows through and when he loses paint on his brown hands blue shows through. His torso was also prone to smoke damage and discolouring as with many vintage Star Wars action figures.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
