The Power Droid action figure was probably a very straightforward action figure to mould and make compared to the level of detail which needed to go into most of the other early Star Wars figures. The Power Droid nonetheless was a brilliant little toy which captured effectively the cumbersome nature of the Gonk Droid in A New Hope. Although Gonk Droids are only seen in the movie at the Lars homestead and on the Sandcrawler he somehow doesn't look out of place anywhere, either with your Cantina figures or bumbling around an X-Wing or Snow Speeder. The Power Droid is a lovable little ancillary character.

Watching any Star Wars movie these days you can pretty much enjoy a game of spot the Gonk Droid whilst you're doing it. There are three of them, for instance, stored in a back room of Watto’s junk shop in The Phantom Menace and if you blink you'll almost miss the one waddling across the floor of Echo Base in The Empire Strikes Back.

Most vintage Power Droids these days are missing their rubber antenna. Thinking back to when I was a child this thing was quite tactile so it's no surprise that many of them got pulled out and lost over the years.

The Power Droid is one of those early Star Wars action figures which as a child somehow managed to change my memory of A New Hope. We first see a Power Droid or Gonk Droid bumbling around aboard the Jawas's Sand Crawler and next wondering around the grounds of the Lars Homestead. The release of the toy, however, fixed it in my mind that this droid had been one of the droids lined up for sale outside the homestead, which is not the case. This is a misconception which has been slightly perpetuated by more recent releases of Gonk Droids, including the POTF2 one which was packed in with a Jawa and also the ESB one which was packed in with a treadwell droid, but which is in fact an ESB two pack recreating the scene on the Falcon where Chewie is making repairs with the help of a treadwell droid and the fleeting moment in which we see a Gonk Droid in the Echo Base hangar bay.

Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
