Kenner R2-D2 (with Sensorcope) Action Figure: Overview

This R2-D2 with sensorscope action figure was to be the first of many gadget-ised R2-D2s. For such a simple feature it was actually a source of considerable joy to turn Artoo's head and watch the sensorscope slide up and down. The feature also took us back to one of R2-D2's best comic moments on Dagobah when he uses his sensorscope as a periscope to find his way out of the swamp.

We only got a better R2-D2 for Dagobah with the 2004 Original Trilogy Collection dirtied-up Artoo, but unfortunately this version didn't come with a periscope/sensorscope which would have just about perfected the figure.

When we look back to the Prequel Trilogy (and the Clone Wars Series) its interesting to remember that R2-D2 has met Yoda before during his time as Anakin Skywalker's trusted astromech droid. Thus, we have to ask with hindsight why Artoo doesn't tell Luke that the diminutive baffoon trying to steal his lunch is actually a Jedi Master. R2-D2 is particularly good at keeping secrets though, especially when we remember that at the end of The Revenge of the Sith C-3PO has his memory wiped and during the next twenty years or so R2-D2 apparently doesn't take the trouble to fill in any of the gaps for him about his past life. You have to wonder whether R2-D2 is deliberately keeping secrets or whether these are just plot inconsistencies which have arisen due to the reverse chronological order in which the movies were made.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
