Kenner R5-D4 1978 Action Figure: Overview

Vintage R5-D4 Figure close up

R5-D4 is a lovable character purely because he doesn't work very well. I don't think the bathos of him rolling forwards for a few feet and then blowing up before he can be sold to Lars was missed on anyone. The early scenes of A New Hope establish in the audiences's eyes that droids provide much of the lighter comic moments, and R5's faulty motivator is among my favourite. R5-D4 is also the second astromech droid we encounter close-up after R2-D2, establishing that he isn't just one of a kind but part of a series of manufactured robots (there are other astromechs on Tantive IV).

R5-D4 is such a nice looking droid action figure and one that somehow captured the spirit of A New Hope as well as any of the action figures for the most commonly seen characters. R5-D4 suggests to us that technology in A New Hope isn't all shiny and state-of-the-art. It is broken down and secondhand. R5-D4's malfunction is both amusing and tragic and it is perhaps this bathos which draws us to him.

The original R5-D4 figure is very collectable indeed and among the rarer figures. He was not part of the first 12 but from the second wave of A New Hope action figures.

Like vintage Kenner R2-D2's poor old R5-D4 does suffer quite badly from sticker loss.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
