Kenner Rebel Commando Action Figure: Overview

Kenner Rebel Commando Figure Front

Part of the the camouflaged ground force on Endor, this Kenner Rebel Commando action figure carries a yellow rifle into battle with the Empire on the forest moon. In The Return of the Jedi they are quite superfluous and almost immaterial to the plot. The Rebel Commando ground crew get left behind during the first encounter with the Biker Scouts, and then they re-join the heroes at the rendezvous point for the main battle in which they play almost no part (except as surrender monkeys) whilst the Ewoks take over the action. They are really background characters who serve as a foil to move the action along and then are rather awkwardly handled by Lucas. In fact, where exactly are the Rebel Commandos and what are they doing whilst Luke, Han and Leia are off getting to know the Ewoks?

Despite their rather loose role in the plot of the Return of the Jedi, the Kenner Rebel Commando figure played a much more important role in terms of its play value. Finally, we had a second sort of Rebel army that we could pit against our Imperial Stormtroopers. Prior to this there had only been Hoth Rebel soldiers available which made it highly limiting when recreating any sort of struggle against between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire as we were stuck on just the one planet.

With regard to the Endor Rebel Commando action figure you do have to ask, 'Has he got his packed lunch stuffed in his trouser pockets, or does he have severe problems with his knees?' He doesn't look very practical as an action figure. Try walking in a forest with that amount of stuff crammed in huge pockets that sit over your knees; it's just not practical.

The beige rifle that came with the Endor Rebel Commando figure had great detail to it and I loved the mud guards that go over his brown boots. Compared to more recent iterations of the character he looks rather stiff and on parade rather than in combat. Many vintage figures feature a bent arm to wield their weapon in combat and I think this figure would have been ever so slightly better had he also benefited from this feature. Aside from that I really can't fault the vintage Return of the Jedi Endor Rebel Commando figure. I love the distinctive shades of green and brown and I really like the detail on his face.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
