Kenner Star Destroyer Commander Action Figure: Overview

Star Destroyer Commmander Figure near mint

With his neat grey uniform, black boots and black dome helmet the vintage Kenner Star Destroyer Commander (aka Death Squad Commander) action figure was just cool. He was proof that the baddies had all the best uniforms and that, although evil, the Imperial rank and file were snazzy dressers. And, there were none of the lamb chop sideburns or 70s hair doos, that let down the uniforms in the Death Star Briefing scene, or the later set of action figures from the briefing scene.

I like the way that the dome-headed evil-doer has his gloves over his sleeves. The Star Destroyer Commmander looks smart, officious and rather reminiscent of a Nazi officer.

For me probably the most noticeable thing about the Kenner Star Destroyer Commander action figure is the sculpt for the face. If you look closely at the nose and the mouth, the proportions and the detail are truly excellent. Compare this for instance to the very basic facial details of the Kenner Luke Skywalker X-Wing Pilot action figure and you can see just how advanced the mould on the Star Destroyer Commander is for it's time. In fact, the facial detail looks good even compared to many much more recent Star Wars action figures!

Star Destroyer Commander/ Death Squad Commander Action Figure Wear and Tear

The vintage Star Destroyer Commander action figure is prone to a few areas of common wear and tear. The image on the right shows an almost mint example with just a slight discolouration to the action figure's chest. When the Star Destroyer Commander figure deteriorates he starts to look considerably less smart.

Below there are a few examples of deterioration in the Star Destroyer Commander action figure.

This particular example of the Star Destroyer Commander on the left is suffering from a common case of paint loss on the domed helmet.

Another common area of deterioration is the presence of chest discolouration on the action figure. The wobbly head issue which plagued many of the earliest Star Wars figures appears to be a rarer problem but does exist.

Star Destroyer Commmander wobbly head

You can just make out that this Star Destroyer Commander has slight splits in his shoulders which mean that he has a loose, wobbly head. For some reason in this closeup he resembles a Thunderbird. The moulding on the nose and lips seems to be incredibly good bearing in mind the age of this figure and the technology available when he was designed.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
