Kenner Warrick W. Wicket Action Figure: Overview

Kenner Wicket Figure on Ewok Battle Wagon

The Kenner action figure for Warrick W. Wicket really did pretty good justice to the diminutive cute teddy bear head. He was perhaps not quite rotund or portly enough to be true to the endearing, plump spear-poking little comic that Princess Leia encounters after her brush with the Biker Scouts. Later Wicket action figures do rectify this but the 1983 Wicket action figure somehow captures something of his essence that to my mind the more modern figures don't manage to do. It's something quite intangible, and perhaps has something to do with the way he's been scaled down so much, so that this Ewok action figure is proportionately smaller compared to the 3.75 inch figures than he was in the film compared to the height of Princess Leia for instance.

The loose Wicket figure is shown here with a reproduction Ewok spear. I did however, recently pick up a complete MOC Wicket figure on a Canadian 77 back. There's a bit of discolouration to the blister but aside from that this Wicket is a really nice carded figure to own.

There are two key iconic instances in the original trilogy Star Wars films in which we see Leia Organa sitting down or leaning forwards to bring herself face-to-face with a diminuitive character. The other of these is the scene from A New Hope when we see her leaning into R2-D2 to insert the Death Star plans. The overall iconography is that of someone of high social status who has the humility of character to meet others on their own level. The theme is exploited more starkly in The Phantom Menace when we see Leia's mother Padmé Amidala (a queen in her own right) kneeling before the Gungan assembly as a means of assuring them that she doesn't percieve herself as being superior to them. What is done really subtely in the first trilogy is done rather explicity and overtly in the Prequel Trilogy. It is Leia's humility which wins over Wicket and then the Ewok tribe and which eventually results in them fighting on the side of the Rebel Alliance against the Imperial forces on Endor. Likewise it is Padmés humility which convinces the Gungans to fight on the side of the Naboo against the Trade Federation.

This iconography is also rather explicitly repeated aboard the Naboo Royal Starship when we see Padmé (disguised as her own handmaiden) kneeling down to clean up the battle-scarred R2-D2 which offers a direct parallel with the scene in which her daughter Leia leans down to R2-D2 aboard Tantive IV in A New Hope. The parallels between mother and daughter are rather neatly handled in this way between the two trilogies.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
