Chewbacca (Early Bird Kit) Action Figure: Overview

Chewbacca Figure Early Bird Kit front with bowcaster

This is a beautifully designed and articulated rendition of Chewbacca and the facial likeness is stunning. The figure was reused for the Black Series 2014 Endor set and you can see why. This is almost the perfect Chewbacca action figure and Chewie is so expressive that he almost comes to life.

Having Chewbacca's saddle bag loose and not moulded on is really nice and also if you turn him over and look at the detailing on his feet the attention to detail is very good with Chewie having both soft pads and all ten toes well sculpted.

This could really be Chewbacca from any Star Wars movie of those in which he appears. And indeed, the Early Bird Kit Chewbacca figure came packed with a Luke, Leia and R2-D2 which perhaps reflects that he's not necessarily tied down to any particular movie or scene.

One nuanced feature of this Early Bird Kit Chewbacca (which you wouldn't guess unless you tried it) is that you can replicate the escape from Kashyyyk scene very well with this Chewie since you can attach a Yoda around his neck for a piggy back. If you have the Yoda which was used for the Firing Canon, Skirmish at the Senate or Battle of Geonosis releases this works very well indeed.

It's interesting to think that Chewie gives Yoda a piggy back a whole generation before Luke has to do this as part of his Jedi training on Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back. Arguably, the scene links the two movies together quite neatly since Chewie is carrying Yoda towards the pod transport which will take him to his exile on Dagobah.

The Early Bird Kit which this Chewbacca was packed with gives a nod back to Kenner's almost accidental marketing success with the Christmas 1977 Early Bird Kit. When the toy manufacturers realised that their first line of Star Wars figures wouldn't be in the shops in time for Xmas they released the Early Bird Kit certificate and figure stand for sale which was essentially a promisary note that the figures would be shipped at a later date. Like this Revenge of the Sith Early Bird Kit, the 1977 predecessor included Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, R2-D2 and Chewbacca.

This Early Bird Kit Chewbacca figure also has far superior joint articulation and a smaller head than it's Saga Series predecessors. This makes it one of the best iterations of Chewie for display in the Legacy Collection Millennium Falcon either as Han's co-pilot in the cockpit or sat at the chess table. Because of the smaller head size Chewbacca also fits more proportionately inside the Legacy Collection Falcon when stood up.

I don't have the Leia or Luke from this set, but having consulted the Jedi Business website they really don't have very much to say for themselves. Whereas the Chewbacca and R2-D2 Early Bird Kit figures are very detailed and well articulated, Luke and Leia have so little articulation that they are practically ornaments and Luke has a rather aesthetically unpleasing retractable lightsaber (another nod towards the 1977 early Bird Kit). The Leia looks very good in terms of display value for the capture of Tantive IV scenes but I can't see much play or display value in the Luke figure at all.

Other Revenge of the Sith Collection Action Figures

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
