Grand Moff Tarkin (Death Star Briefing) Action Figure: Overview

Grand Moff Tarkin Death Star Briefing closeup

This Grand Moff Tarkin action figure came in the 2006 Death Star Briefing seven-pack. There really is something of the night about this rendition of the Death Star Briefing Governor Tarkin action figure. Hasbro have taken Peter Cushing's features and made him look more like Dracula than Christopher Lee.

In his role as Dr Frankenstein, Cushing had played a character who in some senses presided over the creation of a ghastly killing machine and this made him a good choice for the Imperial governor whose job it was to oversee the completion of the first Death Star.

As an aside, since Lee and Cushing had often played villains side-by-side in Hammer Horror films, placing Lee as Count Dooku in the sequel trilogy was rather a master stroke as one of the many subtler ways of joining Episode III (The Revenge of the Sith) to Episode IV (A New Hope). With the CGI presence of Cushing as Tarkin in Episode III (the same movie in which Lee as Dooku is killed) the subtle effect of continuity and connection is also that bit more enhanced. It gives an uncanny sense of continuity between Palpatine's key leaders across the movies which although made over 30 years apart needed to fit together.

One of the great features of this iteration of Grand Moff Tarkin is that you can fold the figure's arms behind his back in a very characteristic Tarkin pose. As with the other Death Star Briefing action figures though, a serious shortcoming is the lack of articulation in the legs which defeats the whole object of the movie moment in which all the participants are seated for the most part.

Other Saga Collection Action Figures

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
