Zam Wesell is one of my favourite bounty hunters and she fits well into the oeuvre of the steampunk-esque bounty hunters that we first encounter in The Empire Strickes Back. Since The Attack of the Clones and The Empire Strickes Back are both the second films in their respective trilogies, AOTCs follows the precedent of The Empire Strickes Back and in doing so fulfils our expectations by also providing us with some new bounty hunters. When we remember that the The Empire Strickes Back bounty hunters were all brand new characters, all new species and all different species when we first encountered them, we get a sense of just how otherworldly and mysterious that they must have appeared to us on first viewing.

Zam lives up to this well, as a female bounty hunter (although not the first female bounty hunter in the prequel films; Aurra Sing takes that accolade in her The Phantom Menace cameo at the Mos Espa arena). Zam also provides us with a brand new species as our first changling or shape shifter. She ticks all the boxes. Her outfit also lives up to expectations and has an industrial, home-made steam punky feel to it (including the chain mail skirt which is a very nice touch). So whilst in The Attack of the Clones Jango Fett fills the role of providing a back story for Boba Fett (as well as being a very cool bounty hunter in his own right), Zam Wesell fulfils our craving for a completely new bounty hunter who fits in well with the tradition of our old favourites.
The Saga Series Zam Wesell action figure itself is thoughtfully designed with great detail. The paint is a nice purple on the outfit which perhaps takes us back a little to our vintage Boba Fett action figures.
With a little bit of playing around the changling mask doesn't fit too badly, and the sharp shooting action (activated by a little switch on Zam's back) is so discretely done and so fast that it actually doesn't feel gimmicky. This said, the one drawback of this Zam Wesell action figure is that her forearm is held on with a magnet, allowing Obi-Wan to cut it off when she is finally caught and questioned by the two Jedi. The forearm can look like its rather loosely attached and spoils the aesthetic a little. All that said, I'm very impressed with the Zam Wesell action figure.
There appear to be two versions of this Saga Series Zam Wesell action figure. One in which her forearm is attached by a magnet and another in which it's held on with a plastic peg. On the version with the plastic peg I've been unable to remove the forearm without damaging the figure so I'm assuming it's meant to be permanently attached.
Note: It is worth pointing out that The Last Jedi bucks the trend of giving us new bounty hunters in the second episode of a Star Wars Trilogy. I think many of us hoped for a new bounty hunter or two in this movie in the tradition of the ones we first met in The Empire Strikes Back and also the appearance of Zam Wesell and Jango Fett in The Attack of the Clones. Instead The Last Jedi introduces us to DJ who is more of a Lando Calrissian rogue figure in that we meet him in a casino, or the casino prison at least (see Lando's casino scenes in Solo: A Star Wars Story) and like Lando in The Empire Strikes Back it is unclear who's side DJ is on (something we would expect to be resolved in the third movie of the trilogy.
All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.
All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
