Throughout the Prequel Trilogy of the Star Wars movies and right up until he turns to the Dark Side Anakin Skywalker always flies yellow ships and vehicles, even when they are ones that he steals or borrows. This seems like a bit of an odd coincidence, but it does help a little to give Anakin a thematic continuity as he grows from childhood and into adolescence and manhood and it ties his character together between the two different actors.
Firstly, in The Phantom Menace Anakin builds himself a largely yellow Pod Racer which he enters in the Boonta Eve Challenge. Later in the movie he ‘borrows’ a yellow Naboo Royal Star Fighter during the battle against the Trade Federation.
Secondly, In The Attack of the Clones Anakin acquires yet another yellow vehicle, the speeder that he steals in order to chase down the bounty hunter Zam Wesell. Anakin claims that he chose the vehicle based on its open cockpit and speed capabilities, but in reality it just had to be yellow in order to lend continuity to his choice of vehicle. Later in the movie we get an exception to the rule when Anakin goes in persuit of the Sand People to rescue his mother Shmi. This time he rides a rather sinister looking brown swoop bike. The change in colour gives us a visual representation that this is a key moment showing us Anakin’s suspectibility to the influence of the Dark Side.
Finally, in The Revenge of the Sith the movie opens during the battle over Coruscant and we see Anakin piloting a yellow Jedi Star Fighter. Later in the movie (when Anakin has turned to the Dark Side) he takes a dark green Jedi Star Fighter to Mustafar, which again gives us a visual representation that this is now no longer the Anakin we knew, but Darth Vader.
The theme even extends into the Clone Wars Series in which Anakin’s Starfighter is again yellow, but this time with some dark grey detailing perhaps reflecting the transition in his character.
I suppose if there is a visual message in all this, it is that whilst Anakin belongs to the light side of the Force he pilots brightly coloured vehicles and once he has turned to the Dark Side he pilots darker ones, from the Dark Green Jedi Star Fighter in Revenge of the Sith though to the dark grey Tie Fighter that he flies in A New Hope.
All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.
All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
