Darth Vader's Apparent Love of the Force Choke...

After having accidentally choked his wife to death in The Revenge of the Sith whilst using the Force choke for the first time, apparently Darth Vader now can't get enough of it and is obsessed with perfecting the skill. Pretty much all we see Vader do in Rogue One is to Force choke Director Krennic, and he here seems to have got the temporary damage level about right. Next he Force chokes a couple of Rebels during the boarding of the Rebel Flag Ship. Then in A New Hope after boarding Tantive IV he tries out an actual strangulation on Captain Antilles to get the feel for the comparison. In the Death Star briefing he tries out another Force choke on Admiral Motti, and then just for good measure he tries it out on Admiral Ozzel in The Empire Strikes Back.

After his first attempt having resulted in Padmé's death (or so Palpatine has lead him to believe), the last thing we would expect Vader to be doing would be to use the Force choke at almost every given opportunity. Perhaps in doing so he's subconsciously trying to get to the bottom of the reason for Padmé's death, and to find out just what level of application of the method is actually fatal. We find out in Rogue One that Vader resides in a fortress on Mustafar so he must have had plenty of time to contemplate the incident with Padmé which of course had taken place on this planet. His choice of this planet can only really be interpreted as being due to the connection with Padmé's death, and also of course his final duel with his old master. Otherwise it is an inexplicable choice of a home. The assumption in The Revenge of the Sith is that Palpatine flies him back to Coruscant for the medical attention that he needs to save him, as we see Palpatine’s ship land and his Clones taking Anakin’s body out of the ship and down the landing platform. As such it's initially quite surprising to find Vader back on Mustafar in Rogue One, almost like he never left. In many ways however, this is fitting since in the Prequel Trilogy we often seen Anakin associated with fire, whilst we see his old master Obi-Wan Kenobi associated with Water. As such, where better for Vader to live than on a volcanic planet? See my article Star Wars Trilogy Framing Devices – Fire, Water and Funerals.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
