In Star Wars Episodes I through to III it is often mentioned that the Sith channel their power through anger and hatred. This seems to be quite a disciplined channelling of anger though, which Count Dooku and Darth Maul, as well as Darth Sidious, manage quite well. By contrast, Anakin Skywalker's downfall comes from unbridled rage and he only seems to be able to control his emotions with discipline in his mechanical manifestation in Episodes IV through to VI. We can only assume that in the time intervening between Episodes III and IV the Emperor has somehow schooled Vader to channel his rage, or indeed that it has been subdued because he has already lost what he cared for most.
In The Force Awakens Kylo Ren likewise suffers from an inability to channel and control his anger. Instead we see his flaring temper lead him to smash up inanimate consoles with his lightsaber and his poor performance in his duel with Ren and Finn is not only attributable to his weak lightsaber skills but also through making decisions out of raw anger as his grandfather had done in the first duel against Obi-Wan.
When we see the two Stormtroopers turn about-face upon hearing Ren's tantrum this shows us that he is perhaps prone to unpredictable outbursts of violence against his own men. This sets him in direct contrast to Darth Vader who only turns on his own rank and file when he perceives them to fail him. We can suspect that Ren is going to be difficult for Supreme Leader Snoke to control and that due to his temper he might turn out to be equally, or even more so, an enemy within than Vader was to the Empire.
We also see anger shine through with even the most accomplished Jedi now and again. We see it flash across Yoda's face in his final duel with Sidious and there is a lot of thinly veiled anger in the character of Mace Windu. What we see here is not so much personal failings in these two characters as a discrepancy between Jedi teachings and real world experience. Even the most Zen of Jedi can't help but lose his temper sometimes.
In fact, the denouement of The Revenge of the Sith is something that none of the Jedi had prepared for and we even see Obi-Wan descending into exasperation after the duel scene with his apprentice 'You were the chosen one! You were supposed to bring balance to the force' etc. The Jedi are not perfect and we never expected them to be, but it also seems that their Jedi teachings have left them unprepared for the very worst that can happen. So, whilst Yoda attempts to school Anakin upon how to control his emotions he has no insight (unlike Palpatine) into what drives those emotions and his trite epithets upon what anger leads to are ineffectual because he somehow misses the potency of the emotions of sentient beings which Jedi dogma alone cannot suppress.
All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.
All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
