Chancellor Finis Valorum Action Figure: Overview

Chancellor Valorum Figure closeup

As one of the many instances of an aptronym in Star Wars character naming, Chancellor Finis Valorum's name suggests the end of valour and is perhaps a reference to Valorum's failure to take decisive action against the Trade Federation and to his failure to stand up to Palpatine, or perhaps literally the end of valour in the larger sense as the Sith start to take more control over the Galaxy.

Looking at the etymology of the word 'valour' from both Latin and old French, we might also interpret Finis Valorum's name to suggest an end to virtue and high values in general, and that he symbolises the crumbling of the values of the Old Republic. In Latin valorem is the accusative case of the noun valor, so in this instance if we take 'Valorum' to be an approximation of this, his surname would qualify the noun finis, suggesting a motion towards the end of virtue.

As well as being a harbinger of the demise of a virtuous Republic, Valorum almost embodies a eulogy to those values. Whilst he in some ways represents a Neville Chamberlain type of figure in The Phantom Menace, the choice to use Pig Latin and the accusative case for his surname Valorum is perhaps also faintly reminiscent of the word 'decorum' in the final Latin lines of Wilfred Owens' First World War eulogy 'Dulce et decorum est' and calls to mind the horrors of war that his weakness will ultimately bring to the Galaxy.

Other Episode 1 Collection Action Figures

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
