Fode And Beed Figure With Jabba The Hutt

Fode And Beed Action Figure: Overview

Fode and Beed Figure portrait

To say the Episode 1 Collection Fode and Beed action figure has so many arms and heads there's very little articulation or, to be more precise, whilst the heads, legs, arms and tail do move there is no joint articulation.

With this two-headed and four-armed Fode and Beed creature Star Wars takes quite a departure in its representations of different species in the galaxy since this one is more reminiscent of a mythological creature or diety than a sci-fi character, unless we're thinking of the sort of sci-fi slap stick of Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the extra heads and arms of Zaphod Beeblebrox. Almost all Star Wars aliens manage to look more or less biologically plausible, this one however doesn't. It's difficult to suspend our disbelief when we see Fode and Beed announcers at the pod race. They also look to be slightly different species to each other so we can't even consider them as conjoined twins.

The clubbed tail is a nice feature and looks like it belongs on a stegasaurus. The gong which comes with the Fode and Beed action figure is quite basic (especially when compared to the Ak Rev and Umpass Stay drums and even the Ewok drum from the Endor Accessory Pack) and there is no drumstick provided to accompany it unfortunately. If you have the Jabba the Hutt figure from the Episode One Collection then you can have Jabba fire the Chuba fish out of his mouth and at the drum to start your own Boonta Eve Challenge.

Other supernumerary limbed Star Wars characters and figures include Dexter Jettster, General Grievous, Nabrun Leids and Gasgano. The weight of them is definitely within the Prequel Trilogy movies, and this emphasis on extra limbs balances against the theme of limbs being amputated in the Original Trilogy from the Cantina onwards. There's almost a fulcrum which swings between characters with extra limbs early on (three at least in Episodes One and Two) to the loss of limbs the further we get into the story. This reaches both a crescendo and a turning point with the defeat of General Grievous and then with Anakin's defeat on Mustafar. From there on in the emphasis is towards the Icelandic Saga trope of limb amputation and away from the multi-limbed curiosities of the Prequel Trilogy. The multi-limbed characters start out by providing a lighthearted backdrop to events (Fode and Beed, Dexter Jettster), and the characters who start losing their limbs in ever more extreme ways suggest a movement away from comedy and towards tragedy.

Note: The heads on the POTJ Fode and Beed version are distinctly different to this 1999 figure.

Other Episode 1 Collection Action Figures

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
