R2-R9 Figure With Naboo Royal Starship Episode 1 Collection

R2-R9 (With Naboo Royal Starship) Action Figure: Overview

The Episode 1 Collection R2-R9 droid action figure is a really nice looking red astromech. Its glowing eye is striking and uses the same method as the Power of the Force two-pack Jawas by letting in light through a transparent panel at the top of his head. R2-R9's dome head has quite a loud click when you turn it which is very satisfying.

Of all the action figures released for the Episode One Collection, the R2-R9 figure is one of the few which has become rare and now fetches a premium price. This distinctive red astromech droid came with the Naboo Royal Starship playset which was one of the few premium purchases for collectors of The Phanton Menace action figures and this goes some way to account for R2-R9's scarcity.

On the Royal Naboo Starship R2-D2 is introduced to us chronologically for the first time when he is commended for his bravery in saving the ship. The bravery of his fallen comrade astromech droids (including R2-R9) who were blown off the ship though is quickly forgotten. R2 gets a heroes reception but there is no memorial for astromechs such as R2-R9 who were just as brave. 'What passing bells for those astromechs who are blown off star ships?' one might ask.

Note: Obi-Wan Kenobi shows a similar lack of thought for his astromech when it is destroyed during the Battle of Coruscant in The Revenge of the Sith. He merely comments 'Oh dear' and then, R4-P17 is quickly forgotten. No wonder that Obi-Wan can't seem to ever remember owning a droid before in A New Hope. Obi-Wan pretty much forgets R4 as soon as his dome head whizzs off into space behind him. Anakin seems much more protective and caring for R2-D2 by comparison; albeit he completely neglects C-3PO in Episode One. Anakin's relationship with droids is inconsistent to say the least. Perhaps his affection for R2 is somehow connected with the affection that Padmé shows R2 in The Phantom Menace after he saves the Naboo Royal Starship. Afterall, R2-D2 comes from Naboo the home of Padmé and the planet on which his life starts to change. C-3PO by contrast is associated with Tatooine and slavery and the life which Anakin leaves behind.

Other Episode 1 Collection Action Figures

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
