MLC-3 (Mobile Laser Canon): Overview

MLC-3 Kenner front

The clear plastic cockpit lid on the Kenner MLC-3 mini-rig worked well since once you put a Rebel Soldier inside you could actually see his head. This doesn't sound like such a big deal. However, once you put an action figure in other mini-rigs such as INT-4, the Return of the Jedi Endor Forest Ranger and AST-5, the action figure essentially disappeared. Back in the days when we were collecting as kids we could ill afford this and I suspect that many closed cockpit mini-rigs sat empty so that we could keep our finite supply of Star Wars figures in view and on display.

The clips which hold the cockpit glass in place on the MLC-3 have a tendancy to snap over time and the trick with this mini-rig is to get hold of one which still has a cockpit lid which is firmly attached to the glass.

Although we never saw these MLC-3 one-man tanks on the battlefield of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back they became an integral part of our Star Wars play world.

There seems to have been some persistence (between Kenner and Hasbro) to put artillery on the Hoth battlefield which wasn't actually there in The Empire Strikes Back and even with the much later Saga Series Hoth Accessory Set we got yet another mini Rebel tank included in the set.

Despite it's snow tracks the Kenner MLC-3 mini-rig does not look to be a very practical vehicle for Hoth and I suspect that it might easily become buried under the smallest of snow drifts.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
