I feel rather ambivalent towards the bulky leviathan which is the Kenner Rebel Troop Transport. There's so much that's awkward about the Rebel Troop Transport. The front and back hatches are fiddly and it's exo-skeleton is easily snapped and broken, but it's still a durable toy that provides a good source of figure storage. Not much else though, since we never actually see the inside of it in The Empire Strikes Back. The ebel Troop Transportship is just for display in its own right and lacks versatility in that you can't exactly pose action figures inside it in the same way you can with Darth Vader's Star Destroyer, the Millennium Falcon or even the Kenner AT-AT. The Rebel Troop Transport has a lot of redundant space for such a bulky piece of kit. All that said, the Rebel Transport captures pretty well the feel of the vessels escaping from Hoth through the Imperial blockade of Star Destroyers. The ones in the film had a shallower hull, but aside from that they do the job.
The ease with which the gun platform can be removed from the Rebel Troop Transport suggests to me that Kenner had in mind that it could be taken out to use as a frontline gun in the Rebel trenches for the battle of Hoth.

There is also the question as to which action figures should pilot the Kenner Rebel Troop Transport and who should man the guns? Should it be a Rebel Solider in Hoth Battle Gear perhaps or an X-Wing Pilot (represented by the Luke Skywalker X-Wing Pilot figure? It was never quite clear.
The box art for this Rebel Troop Transport ship is fairly interesting. For one thing, the deceased Ben Kenobi seems to have incongruously popped by for a chat with Princess Leia up at the gunner's station. Whilst this is odd, it does subtley suggest to the buyer that the play value of the toy is not confined to the plot of the movies. Also in terms of play value, one really nice little touch with the box art is that you have a Rebel Soldier carrying a bunch of Hoth backpacks, presumably representing the evacuation of Echo Base. In all these years I'd never thought of using the Hoth backpacks in this manner, but it did give me inspiration for some of the photos here.
The gunner station is removable and can be used as a defensive gun turret in its own right. This perhaps explains why so many of the five parts for this have gone missing over the years. The seat, the two stands and two cannons all fetch a decent price as individual pieces on eBay these days and the only part of the ship which is more costly to replace is the Rebel Troop Transports bottom hatch.
All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.
All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
