Kenner Bounty Hunter Figures aboard Darth Vader's Star Destroyer

Kenner IG-88 Action Figure: Overview

Because the vintage Kenner IG-88 action figure is quite thin and tall, as well as carrying a long blaster rifle he is often quite hard to balance and you have to bend this bounty hunter over forwards slightly and use his rifle as a walking stick in order to get IG-88 to stay stood up. This is not that great for the aesthetic of the IG-88 figure, and makes him appear a bit of an invalid. Stand him next to the bandaged-up Kenner Dengar figure and your scene starts to look like an old folks' home for bounty hunters, or the accident and emergency department at a hospital in Cloud City.

I particularly like the fleeting moment when we see the slumped, fried body of IG-88 in the Ugnaught's junk processing room. This tells a little backstory ever so quickly, and in such a sotto voce way it's almost effortless. We can just imagine that IG-88 made it to Bespin only to be sneakily blasted and dumped in the trash by Boba Fett before the arrival of the Millennium Falcon. It's a neat little subplot which doesn't interfere with any of the main story telling. Moreover, there seems to be a backstory in the Dark Horse Shadows of the Empire comics which effectively established a rivalry beteween Boba Fett and IG-88 and in the Shadows of the Empire figure series a Boba Fett and IG-88 two-pack was released entitled 'Boba Fett vs IG-88' just to emphasise the point. As such, we can be pretty sure that Boba Fett killed IG-88 to eliminate competition for the bounty on Han Solo and this wasn't just a case of IG-88 being killed off by Bespin security or by a clumsy Imperial Stormtrooper.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
