Of the 1978-1985 Kenner Star Wars action figures that represent individual characters (as opposed to generic army builders such as Imperial Stormtroopers or Rebel Soldiers), Luke Skywalker X-Wing Pilot is perhaps the most versatile in terms of play value. Firstly, Luke was the only pilot figure we had for our X-Wings, Y-Wings and Snowspeeders so he already needed to be in three places at once. Secondly, he was the only X-Wing pilot figure we had so he not only had to do the job of being Luke he also had to stand in as a generic Rebel pilot. He was needed for recreations of scenes from all of the three films and took part in every table top battle against the Empire. There was just never enough of him to go around, especially bearing in mind that you needed two pilots just for your Rebel Armoured Snowspeeder.

The Kenner Luke Skywalker X-Wing Pilot action figure was actually well-suited to being a generic army builder since it is the one figure out of the Kenner first 20 where the least detail was put in to the face. Between the button eyes, the bland face and the painted on goggles under the helmet (which look as much like parted brown hair as they do goggles), this action figure could actually represent any pilot from A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back or The Return of the Jedi without too much trouble.

So many examples of the Luke Skywalker figure in his X-Wing Pilot fatigues are heavily play worn these days with paint loss to the helmet and hands being the most common signs of deterioration. I suspect the damage is testimony to the tremendous play value of this action figure. Kids of the first Star Wars generation probably got more enjoyment, satisfaction and value for money out of this Luke Skywalker action figure than any other and, bearing in mind the number of ships he could pilot, perhaps even more so than the Imperial Stormtrooper.

Luke Skywalker was the very first Star Wars character to have two action figures to represent him (Luke X-Wing Pilot and Luke Farm Boy). A far cry from today when just one movie can easily spawn up to 10 different versions of a character.

Luke's brown button eyes are painted on in such a basic way that he reminds me slightly of an unloved teddy bear.

As with many Star Wars action figures the Luke Skywalker X-Wing pilot came in both a pale faced and cream faced version. Amongst my collection I've only found two Luke X-Wings where the red paint on the helmet is more or less intact.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
