The Kenner Rancor Monster is a fabulous beast, all jaws and claws and properly representative of an iconic movie moment. Once you've had him chew on a Gamorrean Guard and scuffle with Luke Skywalker though where did you put him? The problem is a spatial one. In The Return of the Jedi he's in the Rancor Pit, below all the other characters and now he has to be on the same level as all Jabba's courtiers unless you build a quite large custom diorama. Such incongruities bug me. Maybe I'm a bit OCD.

I would have liked a Return of the Jedi Rancor pit playset something along the scale of the Geonosis Arena Playset where characters could have crowded around and watched Luke fight for his life below or the Rancor Keeper weeping like a big baby for the loss of his pet Rancor Monster (and his job).

As a toy though I have to say the detailing of the vintage Rancor Monster is very good, and he looks suitably fearsome and with his spring action arms and movable jaw he had very good articulation too. He looms over the 3.75 inch Star Wars action figures which really gives a good sense of scale. Until I got myself an original Kenner Rancor Monster I was jealous of everyone who had one.

Over time dirt does tend to get very ingrained into the folds of the Rancor Monster's skin; however, if anything this makes him look better rather than worse and I haven't worried too much about cleaning up my vintage Rancor.

The Kenner Rancor Monster has a lever on its back which opens and closes its mouth. For its time this is very discretely done and works very well.

Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
