Battle Droid with STAP (Sneak Preview) - Episode 1 Collection Overview

Battle Droid with STAP side

It's very easy to underestimate the impact of the humble Battle Droid with STAP when it first landed on the shelves in 1999. As a Sneak Preview toy for The Phantom Menace the Battle Droid with STAP was the first new figure (alongside the Sneak Preview Mace Windu) and new ship for a brand new film that we'd had since 1983. If you happened to have picked one of these up before seeing the trailer then this raised an awful lot of conjecture: what was a Battle Droid, what was it's role within the film, would it be a minor or major character and so forth?

The STAP itself feels rather inconsequential with hindsight, and its unfortunately one of those vehicles where the laws of physics are never going to let it stand up on its own for long without it toppling over and taking down a lot of surrounding action figures with it.

The Battle Droid's elbow and knee articulation is very loose on my copy which makes posing him fairly difficult.

There is a button underneath the bottom of the clear plastic stand which fires the STAP's missiles. As a firing mechanism it's a bit impractical as you have to be holding the STAP in one hand in order to fire the missiles with the other.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
