Kenner Imperial Commander Action Figure: Overview

Imperial Commander Figure Kenner Vintage with blaster

Smart, tight-lipped and standing ramrod straight the Imperial Commander action figure effectively represented the order and discipline of the Imperial army. He was also quite a versatile figure who could stand in for just about every human Imperial encountered in the films, whether a technician, a captain aboard a Star Destroyer, or a general. He was an officer of rank, but the Imperial Commander could stand in for just about any rank within the Imperial hierarchy. He wasn't quite as smart (in my opinion at least) as the Star Destroyer Commander / Death Squad Commander but he's still a fine looking figure.

The Imperial Commander tends to suffer from paint loss on his cap which reveals the skin coloured paint below. This can be really detrimental to his appearance, although it's easily covered up with a black marker pen if you're that way inclined.

Kenner Imperial Commander Action Figure: Variants

When looking at variants of the Imperial commander I just examined the three I had on display and left the rest in their storage. These three turned out to be interesting enough without going further.

Imperial Commander Figure Kenner variants

On display I had three variants

  1. Dark brown hair, white face, solid rectangular silver belt buckle with small insignia on cap. Date Stamp: Hong Kong 1980
  2. Lighter brown hair, matt cream face, circular silver belt buckle with small large insignia on cap
  3. Lighter brown hair, shiny cream face, circular silver belt buckle with small insignia on cap. Date Stamp Hong 1980

You'll notice that I haven't included the datestamp on Imperial Commander number 2. Much to my surprise this figure has no datestamp whatsoever, no location, no copyright, no date. It's just blank! According to the Star Wars Vintage Action Figure Variation Guide this turns out to be a China ‘markings removed’ version which I'd not heard of before. The Guide didn't have an example to show so I've included photos here. I have no idea on value since I couldn't find one for sale when I looked.

In fact, I've only managed to find two mentions of the existence of this figure variant. See also the Star Wars Figure variations website here.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
