It's difficult to know what to say about Nien Nunb, since in The Return of the Jedi we just don't get any personalilty shining through in the character; something which is also true of the very bland General Madine. Neither of the two appear to have any sort of inner life or roundness of personality. For one thing we don't get to know them for long enough for this to happen, and they play functional roles of helping edge along the plot line and little else. This said, by the time we meet Nunb in The Return of the Jedi we have only recently had an overload of larger than life personalities at Jabba's Palace and we are shortly to meet the lovable Ewoks. It is a film bursting with big personalities and in some respects the briefing for the attack on the second Death Star gives us some respite from this.

As an action figure it was quite difficult to know what to do with Nien Nunb. He was unlikely to replace Chewie as co-pilot in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, and especially unlikely to do so prior to the release of the Last 17 Lando as pilot of the ship. Since this is his major role in the film, he was largely redundant as a toy and might be found loitering around the odd X-Wing or B-Wing Fighter but he didn't really do much else (at least not in the world of my childhood imagination).

Nien Nunb tends to be one of the best preserved vintage Kenner action figures. He's photographed here with a gray (Tie Fighter Pilot / Cloud Car Pilot) blaster as I don't have the right black blaster to go with him.

Strangely, once we get a Ten Numb B-Wing Pilot released as part of the Power of the Force series the surname has changed from Nunb to Numb.
