Star Wars Playsets Introduction

Star Wars playsets and dioramas are what really make all the difference for a collector such as myself. Having pristine Star Wars action figures on display for their own sake is one thing, but for me what really counts is being able to situation my Star Wars action figures within the context of the movies.

Endor Attack Playset

From the Power of the Force range onwards Hasbro have gone to great lengths to help us do this, enabling us to create Bespin, Endor and Death Star scenes as well as Mos Eisley Cantina ones which had not previously been possible. From the prequel Trilogy we also got great sets including the Geonosian Arena and Mustafar ones. Kenner had provided us with playsets which were great to have as kids, but their connection to the Star Wars movies was often somewhat looser including an Imperial Attack Base which was never seen in the Empire Strikes Back and a Jabba the Hutt playset which had the trap door underneath Jabba's mighty body. The Star Destroyer playset had features which came close including the meditation chamber but it was an unwieldy piece of kit.

The emphasis of the Kenner line had been to get kids to use their imaginations, to mix things up so to speak. This is often evident from the box art in which we get plenty of divergence from the movies with a Ben Kenobi standing aboard a Rebel Troop Transport for instance, or the grabber on Bossk's CAP-2 being used to carry away a Rebel Commander. Another one was the box art for ISP-6 which showed us Imperial Stormtroopers carrying the rifles which belonged to Hoth Battle Gear Stormtroopers and Darth Vader sitting in the cockpit.

Hasbro on the other hand has tended to move more in the direction of realism and as part of this they have given us more and more playsets which allow for displaying figures and vehicles contextually.

All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.

All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
