The vintage Death Star Droid action figure provides great testimony to the influence that the Kenner Star Wars figures had upon fans. Whilst in A New Hope this droid is seen most prominently aboard the Jawa's Sand Crawler, the naming of the action figure meant that he was almost always played with alongside Stormtroopers, Star Destroyer Commanders and Darth Vader, almost never was he put on Tatooine with Jawas and Sand People. When we wanted access to the movies we turned to the toys and to some extent the toys dictated the way in which we remembered or interpreted the movies. I actually remember as a child the action figure jarring with my recollection of A New Hope and trying to reconcile in my mind the name of the toy with it's place in the movie - it's designation as Death Star Droid won out.
Perhaps the Death Star Droid seems to have found his way onto the Death Star because of the naming of the toy and when the POTF2 black Death Star Droid was released he even came with a mouse droid to emphasise the point. A Death Star Droid or RA-7 droid does appear briefly on the Death Star in A New Hope but I honestly couldn't say whether it was there or not in the 1977 original. Either way, my guess is that the backstory has been retro-fitted to the name. And, even if the Death Star scene is from the 1977 original cut, the RA-7 on the Sand Crawler is much more memorable in the movie itself, whereas the toy is much more memorable as an Imperial droid aboard the Death Star.
As well as the Death Star Droid, I suspect strongly that the action figures for both Snaggletooth and the Power Droid both affected and distorted slightly our young memories of what happens in the first Star Wars movie.

For the backstory of the RA-7 droids its worth having a look at the Wookieepedia site: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/RA-7_protocol_droid/Legends.
The Kenner Death Star Droid figure has proved to be a fairly durable action figure compared for instance to the 1977 a href="http://www.hoththerecord.com/kenner_star_wars_action_figures/c3po_fixed_limb_1978.html" title="C-3PO fixed limb action figure vintage Kenner">C-3PO figure which was much more prone to loose limbs. His metallic paint does however seem to suffer from a bit of rust here and there.
All Star Wars action figures, vehicles, collectibles and Star Wars toys shown on this website are the 3.75 inch scale and from my own private Star Wars collection unless otherwise stated. Where possible original vintage accessories have been used but in some instances I have placed Kenner Star Wars figures with either reproduction weapons and accessories or for Hasbro figures close approximations have been used. This is mostly the case for modern Star Wars lightsabers where the correct item can be very difficult to identify on some ocassions. Vintage Star Wars action figures are shown with their original weapon or accessory when I have them. When a vintage Kenner action figure is shown with an accessory which is not original I have tried to point this out where possible.
All of the Star Wars action figures shown were purchased second hand, usually incomplete, and in bulk. They have been reunited with their original weapons and accessories where we could get hold of them.
